Research interest

My primary research interest is aimed to uncover the genetic basis of inter-patient variability in leukemia risk and anti-leukemic drug response, with a focus on Asian children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). I am interested in combining bioinformatical/biostatistical analyses with wet lab experimentation in the study of molecular mechanisms of cancer and genetic diseases. My studies have discovered a distinct subtype of ALL with predominant genomic abnormalities of EP300/CREBBP (Genome Res 2017), identified non-coding oncogenic mutations in T-ALL (Blood 2017), revealed loss-of-function germline TP53 variants associated with ALL predisposition and adverse treatment outcomes, particularly the risk of second cancers (J Clin Oncol 2018), identified the fourth gene, IKZF1, that can predispose carriers to develop pediatric ALL (Cancer Cell 2018), and uncovered many novel susceptibility loci for childhood ALL (Blood 2019; JNCI 2019/2022; Nat Commun 2019). These findings not only shed new light on the molecular etiology of childhood ALL, but also provided potential opportunities for developing more targeted therapeutic agents in ALL.
